The Arlington Fire District responded to 14 Gentry Bend Road for a reported basement fire around 10:43 p.m. Thursday, Arlington Chief Tory Gallante.
The first fire department unit arrived on the scene within minutes five minutes of the initial dispatch and encountered a heavy smoke condition inside the single-family home, he added.
Five residents were inside the structure at the time of the fire and safely self-evacuated before the fire department arrived. The sleeping family had been altered to the fire by working smoke detectors inside the home, Gallante said.
No civilian or first responder injuries were reported. An investigation by the Arlington Fire District Investigation Division found the cause of the fire was a malfunctioning basement dehumidifier, Gallante reported.
"The structure sustained moderate smoke damage and the residents had to relocate as a result of the incident," the chief said.
Assisting at the scene included the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, Mobile Life Support Services, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, Central Hudson Gas & Electric, and the Town of Poughkeepsie Building Department.
The New Hackensack, New Hamburg, and Pleasant Valley Fire Districts relocated equipment to cover Arlington stations.
